SEO, AEO and GEO: what's the difference, and which does your business need?
SEO ranks your pages, AEO gets your content used as the answer, and GEO helps AI assistants cite your business. How each works and where to start.

Short answer: SEO gets your pages to rank on Google. AEO (answer engine optimisation) gets your content picked as the answer — in featured snippets, voice search and AI overviews. GEO (generative engine optimisation) makes your business easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini to understand and mention. They overlap heavily, and they all start from the same foundation: a fast site with clear, honest, well-structured pages.
Why three acronyms now
For twenty years, getting found online meant one thing: ranking in Google's blue links. That still matters. But customers now also ask questions and get an answer without clicking anything — from a featured snippet, a voice assistant, or an AI chat.
A site manager in Abu Dhabi might search "50 ton crane hire Mussafah" and call the first result. The same person might instead ask an AI assistant "who rents mobile cranes near KIZAD?" and get two or three company names back. You want to be found in both cases. That's where the three disciplines come in.
SEO: getting your pages ranked
Search engine optimisation is the work of making your pages the best result for a search and making them easy for search engines to read.
In practice it comes down to three layers:
- Technical: the site loads fast, works on phones, can be crawled, has no duplicate pages competing with each other, and uses canonical tags, sitemaps and redirects correctly.
- On-page: each page has one clear purpose, a unique title and description, a single H1, and content that genuinely answers what the searcher wants.
- Authority: other reputable sites mention and link to you, and your business details are consistent across the web.
If you're a service business, SEO is still where most of your enquiries will come from. Our SEO, AEO and GEO service starts here for that reason.
AEO: becoming the answer
Answer engine optimisation is about formatting your knowledge so a search engine can lift it directly as the answer.
The core habits are simple:
- Lead with the answer. Put a one- or two-sentence direct answer at the top of a section, then explain. (This article does exactly that.)
- Use real questions as headings. Phrase headings the way customers ask: "How long does crane hire take to book?", not "Booking timelines".
- Mark up your FAQs. FAQ structured data tells search engines exactly which text answers which question.
- Keep answers self-contained. An answer pulled out of context should still make sense on its own.
AEO rarely needs new pages. Most of the time it means rewriting the pages you already have so the answers are easy to find.
GEO: being understood by AI assistants
Generative engine optimisation is the newest of the three, and the one with the most hype. Here is what it honestly involves.
AI assistants build their answers from what they've learned and from sources they retrieve. They're more likely to mention a business when its information is clear, consistent and corroborated. So GEO work focuses on:
- Entity clarity: your company name, what you do, where you operate and how to contact you stated plainly and identically on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
- Descriptive pages: service and location pages that say specifically what you do and for whom, not vague marketing copy.
- Original information: case studies, processes and data that only you can publish. Generic content gives an AI no reason to cite you.
- Structured data: Organization, Service, FAQ and Article markup that removes ambiguity.
What GEO can't do is guarantee placement. Anyone promising your business will appear in ChatGPT answers is overpromising. The goal is to make your business the easiest, most trustworthy source to use.
How the three fit together
Think of it as one stack rather than three separate projects:
- SEO is the foundation. If your site is slow or confusing, nothing else works.
- AEO is how you write on top of that foundation: answer-first, question-led, marked up.
- GEO is how you present your business as a whole: consistent, specific, and backed by real evidence.
A page that does all three well tends to rank, gets quoted in snippets, and gives AI assistants exactly what they need to describe you accurately.
Where to start
If you're unsure where your site stands, work through this list in order:
- Is your site fast on a mid-range phone? Check it in Google's PageSpeed Insights.
- Does each service and each location you serve have its own genuinely different page?
- Do your pages answer the top questions customers ask you on the phone?
- Are your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere online?
- Do you publish anything original — case studies, processes, real examples?
The first two are SEO. The third is AEO. The last two are GEO. Fix them in that order.
If you'd like a second pair of eyes, tell us about your site and we'll point out the biggest gaps. You can also see how we've approached this for crane hire in Abu Dhabi and lifting work around Sohar.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) aims to have your content used as the direct answer in featured snippets, voice search and AI summaries, by writing clear answer-first content with the right structured data.
What is GEO?
GEO (generative engine optimisation) makes your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini to understand, describe and cite, through consistent business information, clear descriptive pages and original, well-sourced content.
Can anyone guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. AI assistants decide what they mention. GEO improves your chances by making your business the clearest, most consistent source available, but nobody can honestly guarantee a placement.
Should a small business start with SEO, AEO or GEO?
Start with SEO foundations: a fast, crawlable site with one clear page per service and location. AEO and GEO build on top of that work rather than replacing it.
